St. James, also known as James the Greater, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He is considered the patron saint of Spain and the patron saint of pilgrims.
St. James was the brother of John the Apostle and was one of the first apostles to be called by Jesus. He was present at many important moments in the life of Jesus, including the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden. After the death of Jesus, St. James traveled to Spain to spread the Gospel.
St. James is said to have performed many miracles during his time in Spain, and his remains are believed to be buried in the city of Santiago de Compostela. The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is a popular pilgrimage route that leads to his tomb.
In art and iconography, St. James is often depicted as a pilgrim with a staff and a scallop shell, which is a symbol of pilgrimage. His feast day is celebrated on July 25th.
